Celebrating Lincoln, Washington, and all of our Scholars

While most high school students enjoy a relaxing day off from school on President's Day, a select few spent their President's Day interviewing for over $500,000 in Lake Erie College scholarship money.

Invitations to Lake Erie College's annual President's Day Scholarship Competition were limited to only 80 students that were accepted for admission for the Fall 2010 semester by January 1. Invitations covered 14 states - Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Michigan, Kentucky, Illinois, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Utah, Colorado and California - and also Japan.

Despite amazing academic credentials (the candidate's average cumulative grade point average exceeded 4.0, with average ACT scores over 30 and average SAT scores of 1915) nerves were high. Luckily, our amazing Storm Guides and Student Ambassadors were hanging out in the hospitality room to share stories and give campus tours --- the cookies and other snacks also helped!

Award notifications will be mailed by March 1, 2010. Congratulations to ALL of our candidates - a job well done!

Waiting is the hardest part.

May 1, the global College Decision Day, will be here before we know it, so now is a great time to address the Lake Erie College Wait List - what it means, and tips on how you can make sure you're not on it for long.

First, let's make one thing clear - being on the wait list does not mean that you have been denied for Admission - so don't give up! It simply means that, although we have all your required materials for your application for admission, we want to learn a little bit more about you before we make a final decision on your application, and would like some additional information from you.

In most cases, you may be a bit borderline for our minimum admissions requirements, so we're waiting to see updated ACT or SAT results or to see how your doing academically your senior year.

If you find yourself on the wait list, here are some quick tips to make the wait not so long:

1. Re-take your ACT or SAT
If you scored below a 20 in any section of your ACT or below a 450 on any section of your SAT, it won't hurt to take it again. Even if you achieve just a few extra points, it could result in you being accepted for admission, and could score you some scholarship money!

2. Be heard
Did you get really, really sick your Junior year, causing your grades to slip? Or maybe in freshman year your future plans didn't include college - and even though beginning sophomore year they did, your GPA hasn't fully recovered. Take time to write a personal statement to explain any hiccups in your admissions materials. A little honestly will go a long way.

3. Keep us busy
Send us your mid-term report card, another letter of recommendation or an award you just won at school. Any time you send something, your application will be re-evaluated.

Remember, you can always contact your Admissions Counselor to discuss your application status. Help us make you a member of the Storm!

LEC in ATL!

Hendrik, Milena and I are so excited to travel to Atlanta, Georgia at the end of the month for a marketing conference with Target X. But even more exciting about our trip is the fact that we will have the opportunity to meet with prospective Lake Erie College students from the Atlanta area while we're down there!

If you're from the Atlanta area, or will happen to be there at the same time, you can sign up to meet with us on Friday, February 26 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Olympic Park. We will be there from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. to answer questions about academics, the admissions process, scholarships and financial aid, residence life, student activities, study abroad, or anything else you may have questions about.

If you are interested in meeting us, e-mail Milena to reserve a time slot! See you in Atlanta!

Storm Watch

We're just a few days into February, but 2010 has already been an exciting year for Storm Athletics.

The year started off with official announcements to add wrestling and men's and women's swimming & diving programs. Coach Hoogenboom (wrestling) and Coach Rose (swimming & diving) have already started recruiting for their inaugural classes, which will compete at the NCAA Division II level next year.

Storm women's basketball has been UNSTOPPABLE in 2010, winning all 7 games they've played this year, bringing their current record to 16-8. A win tomorrow against Central State could break the current record of 8 straight wins, set by the 2007-2008 team.

Storm Football announced their 2010 Signing Day class on Wednesday, February 3rd. The 7 incoming student-athletes are from all corners of Ohio, and will surely be joined by more play-makers before the LEC commitment deadline of May 1, 2010.

2010 will also bring about our inaugural seasons for lacrosse. The men's Lacrosse season begins on February 27 against Lees-McRae and the women's team on March 2 against Ferrum.

Remember, you can follow all Storm Athletic Teams on Twitter. See you at the game!
